How to Wash and Care for Your Pashmina Shawl?
Can you wash pashmina at home?
Yes. Hand-washing is actually preferred over dry cleaning, which can be harsh on delicate fibers. However, dry cleaning is recommended for heavily embroidered pieces .
The 12-Step Hand-Washing Method:
1. Clean your bathtub thoroughly and plug the drain
2. Lay the pashmina flat, folded as needed
3. Soak with lukewarm (not hot) water using a handheld shower
4. Apply neutral detergent or baby shampoo — no harsh chemicals
5. Pat and gently squish to work soap through fibers
6. Soak for 15 minutes
7. Drain water completely
8. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water
9. Transfer to a large ziplock bag
10. Seal and shake gently for 2 minutes to remove excess water
11. Lay on a fresh, dry towel and blot for 15 minutes — never twist or wring
12. Hang unwrinkled from a shower rod to air dry
Critical Care Rules:
• Temperature: Always use lukewarm water; hot water causes shrinkage
• Drying: Never use a dryer. Air dry away from direct sunlight
• Ironing: Use moderate heat with a pressing cloth between iron and fabric. Move iron up and down, not side to side
• Storage: Store folded in breathable cotton bags with cedar blocks or lavender sachets — never plastic, which traps moisture
Pro Tip: Rotate your pashminas. Giving each piece a "rest" between wears allows fibers to recover their loft and reduces the need for frequent washing .
